Funky Button Jewellery - Big Furry Cat - Day Four

Guest Blogger - BigFurryCat

We have been doing craft fairs for some years now and could never really settle on a particular theme.  Anyone who does craft fairs knows how hit and miss they can be anyway.  BUT we came up with a failsafe, am affordable range of funky, quirky jewellery.

Who doesn’t love buttons?!  These necklaces are made of buttons and beads and are available in almost any colour.

And then to match, a cool button charm bracelet.   Buttons are second only to canvases on my list of favourite things to work with!

As well as glass bead charm bracelets

And then last but not least, the teenagers favourite!  Friendship bracelets.

Ring Pillows & Wands - Big Furry Cat - Day Three

Guest Blogger - BigFurryCat
So once I had come up with fingerprint trees for weddings, I decided it would be a good idea to create some other weddingy type products, below are a few from the range.  Most things I make can be adapted in whichever colours my customers require.

This cute flowergirl wand is for little girls who are going to struggle to keep their beautiful bouquets or posy intact and lets face it, if you were 5, would you rather carry flowers or a fabtastical fairy wand?!

Another aspect of a wedding that small people struggle with, is being the ring bearer so we came up with ring cushions that can be made in whatever colours and the rings can be tied on so they don’t end up getting flung across the church!

We have a funky jewellery range anyway so it was a natural progression to make flowergirl bracelets.  The one on the left is the smallest and is based on my 5 year old niece’s wrist, it is rather cute!  Each bracelet is double stranded and the knot is glued for extra stability.

When we first started attending wedding fairs, I made some organza topiary trees to decorate the stand and then had a eureka moment of making them to sell, dur!  They come in two sizes, small for table centrepieces and taller so they stand on the floor and could, for example, be placed on either side of the door at a wedding venue.  Again, they can be made in any colour or combination of colour.  Several wedding fair organisers now have them on their sign in desks at the fairs.  You can tell if BigFurryCat is exhibiting, look for the topiary trees!!

And finally in our wedding range, our blinged up Mr&Mrs Signs, these are really popular to put on the top table at a reception or on the present table.

'Whatever' tick tocks your fancy - BigFurryCat - Day Two

Guest Blogger - BigFurryCat

So here’s the thing, I adore canvases.  I mean, I truly truly adore them.  In fact, if there was a Canvas Anonymous group, I would have to attend it.  As a result of this near on obsession, I am always looking for things to put on them and the range of ‘Whatever’ clocks was a natural progression.  They are all handpainted, I outline the numbers and words and then handfill them all in, trying not to sneeze or wobble!

They come in two sizes : 50x50cm aka HUGE and 30x30cm aka a bit more manageable!  The ‘Whatever I’m late anyway’ version in cream is below:

The clock can be made in whatever (pardon the pun!) colours you like.  This can include a particular background colour but also the colours of the numbers and the wording, I made one recently on a white background with hot pink numbers and black letters which did look rather fabulous!  The picture above features a stencil type font but they can also come with a calligraphy type font :

They come in a multitude of colours :

(This is the smaller version)

I also recently added a slightly different version to the range, this one is a lovely duck egg blue colour :

Again, it can be made in any colour to match your home décor.

I then got a little bit carried away with the theme :

And finally experimented with a different look which I think is beautiful.    This one is only available in the 30x30cm size.

The clock movements are all smooth with no ticking noises and ideal gifts for yourself or a friend!

Tomorrow, we look at our wedding ranges, including cute little bridesmaid gifts and handmade ring cushions.

Looking for a Quirky Handmade Guest Book? BigFurryCat has the answers! - Day One

This week I am delighted to introduce a fantastic little company based down on the South coast.  If you are looking for quirky gifts or an amazing alternative guest book addition to your big day then you've come to the right place!  I was delighted when BigFurryCat joined Ice the Cake and we now have our very own 'Family' fingerprint tree which is being created at our networking events across the country!  Introducing BigFurryCat...

My name is Anna from BigFurryCat Company.  BigFurryCat developed its name from, you’ve guessed it, a big furry cat!  His name is Ozzy and he measures just under 4 feet long without even stretching.  He weighs 10kg and is incredibly soppy, which is good as he has big teeth and claws!  We decided on the name as it was definitely different and unique and we wanted something that intrigued people.  It works because cat lovers always want to know about him and even dog lovers are kinda interested as he is actually more of a dog than a cat anyway!

BigFurryCat sells all sorts of handmade items and gifts.  Our main seller is our handpainted fingerprint tree guest books for weddings, birthdays and anniversaries.  People always do a bit of a double take at wedding fairs as they realise what they are and we get loads of interest as they are unique and unusual.

I think people are looking for wedding ideas that are different and the handmade aspect is also bang on trend so our fingerprint trees tick all the boxes!  Our fingerprint trees are painted on to a canvas which means they can be hung directly onto a wall at home as a lasting momento of your wedding day.  They are completely personalised to our customer’s specifications from the background colour, to the tree colour, to the writing and embossing colour to the ink pad colours.  This, combined with the fact that each tree is handpainted, makes for a truly unique item.  The idea is that your guests will put their fingerprint on the tree to look like leaves and sign their names then at the end of the day, you can have it hanging on your wall at home.  It is an alternative to a guest book though a guest book can of course be used in conjunction with the fingerprint tree.

We can make them in several different sizes, from the smallest size of 40x30cm which in portrait orientation would suit approx 40 guests whilst landscape would suit approx 70, to the biggest size of canvas which is the 60x60cm which would suit a wedding party of around 200 guests.  We have also made a fingerprint tree for 600 guests on a metre square canvas so no wedding party is too small or too big!!

The embossing on the trunk and branches can be either gold or silver and I have also added glitter for some orders to really make the trees catch the light and stand out.

With each order, you get an instruction card so your guests know what to do, a suitable pen that allows you to write on the canvas, two ink pads in colours of your choosing (you can always order extra colours for a small charge) and a packet of wipes for your guests inky fingers!  The ink is water based so comes off your fingers very easily.

We have also started to introduce other fingerprint designs such as this cupcake design which could be used for a birthday party or a wedding to a couple that LOVE cake (don’t we all?!)

I am also very happy to work with a couple’s own ideas.  Because the trees are handpainted by me, I can be really flexible with their design and style, adding more or less branches as needed or embossing names into the heart or onto the bottom of the page.  You can of course buy other fingerprint designs on the internet but they all seem to be a lot of money for a pdf printout on a bit of paper so I do genuinely believe that our fingerprint trees offer something that little bit special and different.

Tomorrow, we’ll tell you about the coolest clocks you will ever find!!

A Victoria Sponge - the perfect ingredient for your Diamond Jubilee Party!

Article guest blogged by Chantel from The Cupcake Box

The Victoria Sponge also known as a Victoria Sandwich and less commonly a Victoria Cake but none the less a classic...and what I would consider to be a must have at any Jubilee party.

About a week ago I was in the middle of a Jubilee inspired photo shoot when it got me to thinking what the actual history was behind the Victoria Sponge.  Many of you can probably guess that it was named after Queen Victoria, who reigned for a staggering 63 years!

It is said that Queen Victoria would request small cakes to relieve the rumbling tummies of her courtiers between lunch and dinner time.  It was her lifelong friend and lady-in-waiting, the Duchess of Bedfordshire that was the creator of the British meal “Afternoon Tea” which involved serving small sweet cakes accompanied by tea (usually Darjeeling) and sandwiches.  The cake at the centre of tea-time evolved over generations into the Victoria Sponge we know, and love, today.

However, you may be surprised to learn that the official Women's Institute guidelines dictate that a real Victoria Sponge has only a jam filling and absolutely no cream!

Question is; how do you like yours?

Married 19 Years & my heart still skips a beat - Charms By Joanna - Day Five

A round up of my week...
I celebrated my 19th wedding anniversary by cooking a slap up meal for my dearly beloved. I hope all of our brides are as happy after 19 years as we are. My heart still skips a beat when I know he is on his way home from work.

More good news this week - we have received an order for 110 Happy Bags. Yippee - that is another £110 for Cancer Research! These ones are going to Australia for a wedding! We are changing them slightly, the bride-to-be is going to add the chocolates and coins herself, this will save potential problems with Customs and food (for those of you who have see Nothing to Declare!) We are changing the wording slightly for her as well, instead of 5 pence they will say 5 cents.
Time to do another shop, this time for fabric, as our Australian bride-to-be has chosen the standard bags with lots of different patterns and orange, pink or yellow backing colours.

I love being part of Ice the Cake, they have the most amazing collection of suppliers. We had another wonderful networking evening last night, this time was a Jubilee party at Worton Park. I made some new wine glass charms and decorated some gift boxes, perfect for anyone getting married this year who have chosen the Jubilee theme.

Bag and phone charms are also available as special gifts to go inside the boxes, to either co-ordinate with the wedding theme or designed according to what your special guest loves.

Time to go, I have 2 dogs and I am being pestered to go out and play in the garden, this entails throwing a ball for one and blowing bubbles for the other! Loads of fun.  Enjoy the Sunshine :)

Wow that was a quick delivery! - Charms by Joanna - Day Four

My bride to be in Cork has chosen to have names added to the charm packaging (I offer this free of charge) so I have added 1 name to the relevant charm and listed them on Etsy. I will add the rest of the names once she has purchased them.  You can visit my Etsy shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/charmsbyjoanna

Yippee – my order from China placed on 'Day 1' has arrived! That is quicker than some UK deliveries!  Now for the Champagne coloured charms for mum’s friend. This set has 3 Bridesmaid charms so I added a little something extra at the back of each one to make them different.  I like to truly personalise the charms to make every single one individual.

Made with Lots of Love - Charms By Joanna - Day Three

Today I received a letter from a friend of mum’s, asking for a set of Top table charms. It was just as well I ordered more of them yesterday as I am running a bit low!

I sorted out the beads etc... to make sure I had the correct colours (Champagne) & I created the designs for her.  I then decided, as I had all of my beads out, why not make some more charms so another 3 sets done.

Today I was also absolutely delighted to have received a reply from my bride to be in Cork.  She has decided on the tiny hearts so I've made her set. She has 2 Bridesmaids and 2 Best Men so I offered to add an extra tiny heart to the back of 1 of each so they do not get them confused, she said she cant wait to see them.  While I had my beads out, I made another 3 sets of charms!  As I'm sure you've noticed by now - I love my job!

Something Blue... from Charms by Joanna - Day Two

Today I've had a request for a set of Top Table wine glass charms in Royal Blue, so I have been designing some samples for the lovely Bride to Be to choose a style. I've made one with chain and one with a hoop as well as a choice for the beads etc.

Whilst we were chatting I told her all about Ice The Cake in case she needed anything else for her wedding in July. How about a head piece like the one Kim Kardashian wore?  Sarah from Energise Weddings replied to my enquiry so hopefully that is another item sorted for her.

I placed an order with one of my regular suppliers, so more charms and beads should be with me soon. It took me most of the day to go through all of the lovely things they sell as I just had to make sure I had not missed anything!  I love receiving new beads and charms it's so exciting when there's a ring at the door and a delivery man is standing there with a little box of goodies for me... I hope that my customers have a similar feeling when their orders arrive from me!

Until tomorrow have a lovely day...

Joanna xx

'A Week in the Life of...' Charms by Joanna - Day 1

Joanna first joined Ice the Cake towards the end of last year and since launching her business at the beginning of this year Joanna is going from strength to strength.  She is an absolutely lovely lady and is raising money for Cancer Research along the way.  So it is an absolute pleasure to introduce this weeks Guest Blogger... Charms by Joanna

Please tell our readers a bit about you & Charms by Joanna…
I started making cards and also glass painting on plastic boxes many years ago. I bought every box I could find, most of them contained pony beads so I was then left with an abundance of these gathering dust. Mum then suggested I try making bag charms because she did not like the big, chunky ones available in the shops so, I bought the findings, tools, and . . you guessed it, more beads! I never even used the pony beads, I gave them away to someone making children's jewellery to raise money for charity. The bag charms progressed to include phone charms, then about 5 years ago I started making wine glass charms for friends and decided they needed boxes to keep them safe so, then added decorating boxes back into the mix. I decided it was finally time to start selling, I was running out of space because I was making far more that I could give away and so I became a sole trader in February 2012.

How do you come up with your designs/ what influences you?
Things that sparkle, that is what influences me most, I call it "Magpie Syndrome" - shiny!. My designs just pop into my head, many times I have selected the charms to go on the bottom of a bag charm for example, I then rummage through my vast collection of beads and findings then end up putting a different charm on the bottom! The only time I make anything specific is when I am filling an order. Even then, I usually give them a choice and very rarely make 2 the same. The boxes, a little less sparkle but I can use just about anything to decorate them. I love shopping and see so many pretty things that I either think "will it go on a box?" or "can I use it to make a charm?" - I have used wooden shapes to make Christmas tree decorations, wrapping paper to make decopage pictures for cards and boxes, and even made a "Kindle" for my friend by printing a copy of the first page of her favourite book, painted a piece of MDF shaped to the same size as a real Kindle, painted it black, then painted the buttons etc and stuck the page to it so it looked like a real one too!

What would you call your ‘style’?
Dainty, unlike me . . .My bag charms tend to be more dainty than most and I find it very difficult to make the designs random, even ones that may look random to others actually have a specific pattern, many times I have made something then changed it because it looked uneven.

What is currently your favourite design?
Wedding wine glass charms, I am having loads of fun making them to match a bride's requirements for colour and wording.

Who inspires you?
Mostly my mum, she was the one who started me off with the beads and it is her fault I now have a growing stash of fabric and ribbon, which I use to decorate the boxes - but I love her dearly, she is my best friend.

If you could design a charm for anyone in the world who would it be and what would you create?
Ooh, good question . . . He probably would not have much use for them but I would maybe make some wine glass charms for Craig Busch at Kingdom of Zion in New Zealand, they would have to have cats so I would probably do them all with the same mix of oranges, yellows and black beads then put a different cat charm on each, I think I have about 10 different ones in my stash so that could be a set of 10. I would also add a phone charm to match and maybe a keyring to go with it, and maybe something he can pin to his safari hat!

What is your greatest achievement?
I think that would have to be fulfilling the wishes of a dying woman. I met a lovely lady living in Surrey a few years ago, who was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer, they could not trace its source which meant it was less than 2mm (too small to bee picked up by any scans). She had all of the radio and chemotherapy her body could cope with but it persisted. She asked me to make boxes for all of her friends and family and I made matching cards as well. Her intention was to write letters for each of them in the cards and put little gifts in all of the boxes, she was going to wrap them all up with their names on and hide them, leaving a note for her husband to find after she had gone.

I made approximately 30 boxes with cards, and mum and I had delivered them to her, we had a cup of tea and that is when she told us what they were for.

If you weren’t doing this job what do you think you would be doing?
When I was at school I actually wanted to be a food scientist or biochemist! I failed my theory for my cookery exam by 2 points, had I managed another couple I would have had an A because they could not fault my practical. I hated the teacher who did the theory hence I did not do well, I was gutted as needed this exam to go with my Chemistry and Biology passes. Had I have redone cookery I guess I would probably be working in a lab about now but I guess the crafting bug would still have caught me somewhere along the way.

How do you spend your time when you are not working?
Difficult one to ask as I never consider this to be work, I just love it so much. Many times I have taken a box of card making things on my summer holiday and come back with the box filled with Christmas cards instead. I often take beads and things when I go to stay with my friends in Leicester.

Do you have a current special offer for Ice the Cake readers?
Any orders through Ice The Cake or anyone mentioning ITC when they place an order will get 10% discount, Charms by Joanna will absorb the discount for the Happy Bags to ensure the charity still receives their full share.

A Message from Joanna...
I love what I do and if I can put a smile on someone's face then that makes me happy too.

Your Lancashire Wedding Planner in Rome... Country Weddings Italy - Day 3

A former Lancashire resident, Nicola Heaney, who grew up in Blackpool but who has lived in Rome for the past 22 years, has decided to embark on a new business adventure after years of success in the translation and interpreting sector. Her goal is to work with British couples who want to get married overseas.
Over the years, Nicola has also been involved in the organisation of some friends’ weddings in Italy and has also collaborated at some international business events. She has now decided to combine professional and personal experience to set up a business organising destination weddings in the countryside north of Rome and throughout central Italy: Country Weddings Italy. Nicola is now qualified in Advanced Wedding Coordination and Design and with her business partner, Daniela, they launched their new website www.countryweddingsitaly.com at the end of January. There is also a regular blog on wedding information and showcases to read: countryweddingsitaly.blogspot.com
“The area north of Rome is beautiful. It has everything: lakes, coastline, hills, Etruscan and Roman ruins, castles, villas, country estates and characteristic farmhouses, perfect venues for weddings. The advantage of getting married in Lazio is that a couple can choose a stunning rural setting for their wedding, but have the option of visiting the city just a short drive away. Rome is a beautiful place, a city to be visited at least once in a lifetime. We have also selected some possible venues in Umbria, which is close by and fantastic to visit.
We aim to provide a bespoke wedding service for anyone who is looking for that individual, personalized attention and approach that they would get from a wedding planner at home.  There are no set packages, no set styles, and what is more important, we spend an unlimited amount of time spent on planning the whole event. We work with each couple to bring to life the wedding day that they have imagined and dreamed about, right down to the choice of wedding cake, flowers and table décor. The fact that I am English means that I have an immediate understanding of what the couple wants.
“We are in our early stages,” says Nicola, “but we have already managed to involve a lot of people, and have set up excellent relationships with local suppliers who would be involved in the organisation of each event. No two weddings will be the same.

We can also provide ideas and services on accommodation and pre and post wedding activities to share with your family and friends, from mini cookery courses to a day driving a Ferrari round a racetrack.

So after reading this fantastic guest blog from Country Weddings Italy do you fancy getting married in Italy now?  Watch out for an incredible Competition that Country Weddings Italy will be launching with us TOMORROW!  If you can't wait until then to contact them...
